In recent decades, Christianity has been subjected to intense scrutiny and criticism, especially from Western academics and writers. Early in our century, there emerged a new perspective dubbed the ‘New Atheism’, which expressed open hostility towards religion, especially Christianity. Led by writers such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett – sometimes described as the four horsemen of the New Atheism – this new perspective portrays Christianity as intellectually bankrupt and dangerous. These critics target Christian beliefs and practices not only as intolerant but even as the root of violence. The titles of their books say it all: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason by Sam Harris, God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens, and Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon by Daniel Dennett.
