The doctrine of creation is a central tenet of the Christian faith. The Church confesses – in the words of her ancient creeds – that she believes ‘in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.’ This doctrine, which is firmly grounded in Scripture, makes the bold claim that the cosmos came into being not by accident but because of the will of the Creator. This means that the universe of which we are a part has a purpose, a telos. But the doctrine has special significance in our day as we become increasingly aware of the ecological crisis that threatens the future of the planet. The essays in this volume examine the different aspects of this doctrine and its enduring importance and relevance today.
